Export BMW X3, X5, & X6 Models on Sale Call 1-888-705-6787

Jun 28, 2011 – It's hard to believe the 2012 BMW X3 is almost here. The BMW X3 is the Euro-premium soft-roader that got the Europeans thinking crossover instead of sport-utility all the way back in 2003, and we have now arrived at the second iteration. They grow up so fast, don't they?

For the second-generation X3 known internally as "F25," BMW brought us out to a patch of rural Bavaria to thrash around a preproduction vehicle. We were to negotiate some mild off-road stuff, do some splashy stuff and then drive several glass-smooth stretches of two-lane pavement where we would apparently be permitted to gun it while keeping an eye peeled for chickens and horses wearing lederhosen. Of the preproduction units present, we jumped at the new top-of-the-line 2012 BMW X3 xDrive35i.

The first-gen X3 (known as the "E83") stops its build in early August of this year at the Magna Steyr plant in Graz, Austria, and by then, the model will have sold over 600,000 units worldwide, making it the global sales king in its segment. A new production line at BMW's plant in Spartanburg, South Carolina, is already ramping up for the 2012 BMW X3.

Is Bigger Better?
Until BMW finally started bringing us the 328i sport wagon, the X3 has always been as close as North Americans would ever get to the small, sleek haulers seen hither and yon in Europe. Yet sales figures of the current X3 have been pretty lackadaisical in North America, according to Bernd Hassenjuergen, the X3's marketing boss. Hassenjuergen tells us that the top markets for the X3 have been (in order) Germany, the U.K. and then the United States.

"This new generation X3," Hassenjuergen confides, "needs to flip that around a little to make the U.S. the No. 1 market." As you might have already guessed, the strategy for the new X3 involves making it bigger as a consequence, and now this compact crossover is only a tad smaller than the original X5. But this has also been done to the X3 to help create some marketing space for the BMW X1 crossover now starting deliveries in Europe.

We have to say that the current X3 does come off a little tight in the living-space department, plus there are a few too many bits of cheap plastic and the nonadjustable suspension feels wound up a little too tightly. To make the point, BMW forced us to drive a current X3 xDrive30i from the airport to the event site southeast of Munich. Once we arrived and clambered into the new X3, we noticed the new vehicle's clearly better ingress and egress given the broader overall dimensions and slimmer side sills. Exterior length for the new 2012 BMW X3 grows 3.2 inches, width by 1.2 inches and height by a bit more than half an inch. The wheelbase has been stretched a little more than a half inch as well.

Inside, the room for more American-size bodies has been maximized with a veritable mile of headroom in front and back, plus eight-tenths of an inch more rear knee room. All of this is appreciated and should immediately put this X3 on more shopping lists than the outgoing model managed. Basic cargo room is up to 19.4 cubic feet behind the second-row seat, an increase of almost 3 cubic feet.

The 2012 BMW X5 Review
The original BMW X5 was the first entry Barvarian Motor Works into the SUV market. Since then, JP Powers X5 has been rated among the best for lively performance and quality design. It also gets high marks for its interior design. In other areas, such as security, reliability, fuel economy, and resale value, usually ranked near the middle when compared with other middle-luxury SUV. The next big refresh for the new BMW 5 Series will probably not arrive before model year 2014.

The 2011 BMW X5 ranks 12 out of 17 Luxury Midsize SUVs. This ranking is based on our analysis of 67 published reviews and test drives of the BMW X5, and our analysis of reliability and safety data.

The BMW X5 continues to offer superior driving dynamics and a plush interior. For 2011, new gasoline engines give it more power and better fuel economy than before. Though it costs slightly less than the outgoing model, it’s still pricey for its class.

The refreshed 2011 X5 starts at $46,675, which is over $1,000 less than the 2010 model. However, that’s still a lot compared to the X5’s competitors -- especially when you consider that higher trims like the V8-powered xDrive50i start at nearly $60,000. But if you value a sporty, luxurious ride above all else, the price premium may be worth it. With an optional third row and seating for seven, the X5 can even function as an upscale family hauler.

"Exercise caution with the options list, and the X5 can still be had for a reasonable price -- well, reasonable compared with the rest of the luxury-SUV flock,” writes Car and Driver. “And like its begotten offspring, the X6, the X5 remains a surprisingly agile and entertaining way to transport the family. The new, more powerful engines will only enhance its appeal."

Not only are the new engines more powerful, but they’re expected to be much more efficient. While the 2010 X5 had only an average base fuel economy rating, the new model is expected to get two more miles per gallon in the city and three more on the highway. That makes its estimated 17/25 city/highway rating one of the best in the entire luxury midsize class. Another advantage the X5 enjoys over competitors is a standard xDrive all-wheel drive system.

BMW decided to freshen up the X5 by throwing all sorts of under-the-hood upgrades for the 2011 line-up. It has been a long time since an automaker decided to use powerplant upgrades as a means to refresh a model line-up. Read along to find out if they succeeded in this interesting route.

Being the Ultimate Driving Machine, we expected nothing but the best when it came to the driving experience. The X5 was no surprise whether on the interstate or the backroads. Even though the handling was not really like the one offered by 3-series but it was way better than many other SUVs. With enough power under the hood, we never had second thoughts about switching lanes on the freeway. The double wishbone front and multilink rear suspension made sure that those sharp corners are turned swiftly.

The interior of the X5 remains unchanged for the most part. The iDrive is as simple as it gets and really let's you take control of all the functions without moving your eyes off the road. The seats are as sporty as ever and really provide you the best driving experience. If you are looking for a cushy ride of a Lexus then you are in the wrong vehicle. Our press vehicle didn't come with the optional lane departure warning system and active cruise control. Overall the interior is very well made and shows the german sorry American build quality. The interior provides about 75 cubic feet of storage which is about average for the class. Second row has ample room and our passengers provided a very positive feedback on the overall comfort. Our test vehicle did not have the optional 3rd row seating and looking at the space available, we don't even recommend going that route.

We here at AutoTalk think that BMW has done an excellent job with the refresh of the 2011 X5. Even though the exterior and the interior mostly remain unchanged, the power plant upgrade is what really shines. Our xDrive35i was swift while driving, comfortable for the passengers and luxury enough for the weekend outings. If you have a family of 4/5 and are still finding it hard to leave your performance sedan then X5 might be a perfect solution for you. Just don't forget to add the right options to the starting price of $46,675.

"Instead of restyling the X5, BMW concentrated its efforts in the engine room. Even so, two of the four engine choices are carryover. The six-cylinder turbo-diesel, which was just introduced for 2009, is one, but that engine’s beguiling combination of 425 lb-ft of torque, coupled with the ability to post EPA numbers of 19 mpg city and 26 mpg highway, hardly mark it as a candidate for an upgrade. And at the top of the model range, the 4.4-liter turbo V-8 in the X5 M was similarly left alone, its 555 hp and 500 lb-ft apparently deemed sufficient, at least for the time being.

The two mainstay gasoline engines, however, are both new. In place of the old, normally aspirated straight six, the X5 now uses a new, turbocharged unit. It is not the twin-turbo example we know and love in the 135i, the 335i, and elsewhere, but instead is the latest generation turbo six. (Note to BMW geeks: that’s codename N55, rather than N45 for the older, twin-turbo six.) It appears also in the 535i Gran Turismo and the 2011 335i coupe/convertible—
both out this spring—and shortly in the new 535i sedan, on sale in June.

Now with a single turbocharger, direct injection, and Valvetronic, it produces 300 hp and 300 lb-ft (the same as the old twin-turbo six, depending on the application) but is more fuel-efficient and more easily meets emissions standards. In any event, its 300 ponies are 40 more than you got in the 2010-model X5, which had a normally aspirated six, and the 300 lb-ft is an even bigger increase over that car, which was rated at 225 lb-ft. Although the engine displaces the same 3.0 liters, its more bodacious output evidently has earned the base car a bigger number in its ridiculously complex model designation: X5 xDrive35i, rather than X5 xDrive30i.

The V-8 X5 has been granted a new model designation, too: xDrive50i—up from xDrive48i—as its new eight-cylinder engine has also made leaps in output while actually going down in size. In place of the previous, normally aspirated 4.8-liter V-8, there is a new, 4.4-liter unit that sports direct injection and two turbochargers. The change takes power up from 350 to 400 hp and torque from 350 to 450 lb-ft. This twin-turbo V-8 was first introduced in the X6 and will soon appear in the new 550i. Although more powerful than the outgoing 4.8-liter, the new turbo V-8 should return about the same fuel economy: 14/19 mpg." - Automobile Magazine
