"Overview
This is the vehicle Mercedes originally intended to replace the military-grade G-Class. The GL, which was new for 2007, has a lot to offer that the G-Class doesn't: three rows of seating, comfortable highway ride and impressive handling. But it pays the price with less off-road capability than the G. That's a compromise many sport/utility buyers are willing to make. In addition, the unibody GL is mass produced and shares platforms with the R- and M-Class, all of which bring the price down when compared with the hand built, body-on-frame G.

Despite the commonality of platforms, the GL has a different feel on the road -- on the highway and on canyon roads -- from the R and M. There isn't an AMG version of the GL-Class, nor is there a gas-powered V-6, but there are still three engines to choose from.

The base engine is a 3.0-liter turbodiesel, which uses an exhaust after treatment system to ensure the vehicle adheres to new strict emissions regulations. The other two engines are V-8s; all three engines are mated to a seven-speed automatic.

The Range

What's New
There are only minor changes for 2011. The 382-horsepower GL550 gains a restyled front bumper. All models get a rearview mirror with integrated compass, what the company refers to as saddle-style second- and third-row head restraints, and the option of blind-spot assist. Another new option is the next generation of telematics, called mbrace, which includes safety and convenience features.

Exterior
Boxier than the M-Class but not as cubic as the G, the GL is the largest SUV Mercedes-Benz offers, at 200.6-inches long, and comes with 19-, 20-, or 21-inch wheels and tires.

Interior
Three-row seating is standard, with the option of a power-folding third row; the cabin also uses real wood trim. A panoramic sunroof also comes standard. Options include three-zone climate control, rear-seat entertainment system, and much more.

Performance & Handling
The engine with the least horsepower is also the one with the most torque -- the 3.0-liter turbodiesel's 400 pound-feet of torque is nine more than the GL550 offers. Steering is linear in the GL, transmission is excellent, and the big SUV does surprisingly well in turns. It weighs nearly 5,500 pounds, yet only takes 6.5 seconds to reach 60 mph and requires 129 feet to stop from that speed.

Safety
Nine airbags are standard on the GL-Class -- including three-row window curtains -- as are stability control, traction control, disc brakes with ABS and brake assist. Also standard are Mercedes' Pre-Safe system with active front head restraints.

EPA Fuel Economy
GL320 BlueTEC 4Matic: 17 mpg city/21 mpg highway
GL450 4Matic: 13 mpg city/18 mpg highway
GL550 4Matic: 12 mpg city/17 mpg highway
