This generation is both. It retains the interior amenities that the S-Class is known for, the sportiness and handling of Mercedes, and much more technology than ever before. What's New
Last year's S63 AMG had a 6.2-liter, 518 horsepower V-8; for 2011, it has been replaced by a 536-horse, 5.5-liter twin-turbo V-8 with direct injection and start/stop technology. The other new engine is the automaker's 241 horsepower, 3.0-liter diesel with 429 pound-feet that comes standard with all-wheel drive. The hybrid gets new wheels and dark brown eucalyptus wood, the S600 gets larger 19-inch wheels and the S65 AMG's horsepower increases by 17 horsepower.

Exterior
This generation S-Class is more modern and aggressive than the vehicle it replaces. Its styling is nearly 7 Series meets Maybach. In addition to new wheel options, the S-Class has Magnetite Black as a new color.

Interior
The S-Class cabin contains cool features, such as the Splitview dual content screen, in a surprisingly low-key cabin covered in leather, aluminum, and wood. Rear-seat legroom is more than generous, as is the 16.3 cubic-foot trunk.

Performance & Handling
The S550 reached to 60 in 5.3 seconds, went through the quarter mile in 13.8 seconds at 102.3 mph, and the 4600-pound sedan only needed 115 feet to stop from 60. One of the most impressive things about the S-Class, though, is that there doesn't seem to be much of a ride/handling compromise. The sedan's suspension absorbs road imperfections, yet has a high level of grip -- 0.89 g on the skidpad -- and Active Body Control keeps the Benz flat during hard cornering.

Safety
Eight airbags are standard, with dual front, front and rear side, and front and rear curtains. There are disc brakes with ABS and brake assist, plus Mercedes' Pre-Safe system. It also comes with stability control and traction control.

It seems like every automaker wants to have a "four-door coupe" in its lineup these days. Hyundai has its rakish new Sonata, Volkswagen has the stylish CC and BMW has reportedly given its Gran Coupe concept the go-ahead for production. This is certainly one of the hottest automotive design trends of recent memory, but we must remember that it all started with the Mercedes-Benz CLS back in 2004. The folks from Stuttgart told us that coupes can have more than two doors (though we're still not 100 percent behind that idea), and the CLS quickly became one of the most stylish four-door vehicles on the market. Even today, the original CLS bodystyle still looks fresh, modern and sexy.

Recently, we came across some leaked shots of the 2012 Mercedes-Benz CLS, showing the stylish new design that will be unveiled at this year's Paris Motor Show. Now we have the official images direct from the manufacturer, and this car is even more beautiful in full high-res glory. The new headlight design is quite striking, and the CLS uses a full-LED setup, with a total of 71 bulbs making up the main headlamps, running lamps, turn signals and side lamps. We're really anxious to see what this looks like in person with the sun below the horizon.

Inside, a new three-spoke sport steering wheel is on hand, and the CLS now uses a column-mounted gear selector similar to that in the higher-end CL and S-Class cars. The rest of the interior mixes luxurious appointments with modern style, and the end result is something that not only looks sporty and elegant, but immensely comfortable and cozy.

We don't have official word about powertrains, but expect the CLS to be offered with two different gas engines when it goes on sale in North America in mid-2011. An all-new direct-injected 3.5-liter V6 is anticipated to be the base engine in the CLS350, while CLS550 models will reportedly receive a twin-turbo 4.6-liter V8 good for around 430 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque. Of course, a CLS AMG will come shortly thereafter, packing lordly amounts of power.

Styling for the 2012 Mercedes-Benz M-Class is said to be more angular and "geometric" than today's look. There will be visual kinship with Mercedes' GLK-Class premium-compact SUV, but the midsizer won't be so exaggerated, presumably owing to its older, more-conservative clientele. Among the reported changes are a raised hood line in deference to Europe's pedestrian-protection mandates, a narrower grille, reshaped headlamp clusters with top-mount LED running lights, more heavily sculpted body sides, and a wider liftgate surmounted by a modest spoiler. No word about the interior yet, but we'd expect it to mimic the layout and design flavor of M-B's latest E-Class premium-midsize sedan. A 5-passenger seating package will continue.

On the technical side, the U.S.-market 2012 Mercedes-Benz M-Class line is expected to reprise all current powertrains without change except for the 3.5-liter V6 in the mainstay-seller ML350. That engine should be replaced by an updated version with direct fuel injection and a reported 301 horsepower, up from 268. The ML550 will return with a 381-horsepower 5.5-liter V8, the hotshot ML63 AMG with a 503-horsepower 6.2-liter V8, and the ML350 BlueTEC with a 210-horsepower 3.0-liter turbodiesel V6. Also due for an encore is the new-for-2010 gas/electric version, the ML350 Hybrid (Mercedes prefers HYBRID), which mates a modified 3.5-liter V6 with two electric motors for a net 335 horsepower. The Hybrid uses an exclusive "Two-Mode" transmission, co-developed and shared with BMW and General Motors. It's basically a continuously variable transmission (CVT) that behaves much like an automatic. All other M-Class models should retain their current 7-speed automatic. Electronic all-wheel drive will remain standard, with rear drive reserved for a base non-hybrid ML350.

Similarly, the 2012 Mercedes-Benz M-Class should be available with some or all of the gizmos already offered on larger Benz passenger cars. These include Attention Assist "drowsy driver" alert, lane-departure-

warning and night-vision systems, and perhaps a road-sign-recognition feature that has so far been restricted to Europe. As for comfort and convenience features, look for another long standard-items menu, plus options such as front- and rear-obstacle detection, a navigation system with real-time traffic info, rearview camera, high-def audio, an onboard hard drive for digital file storage, digital-music player connection, keyless entry/engine start, and assorted interior-trim upgrades.

The big Mercedes SUV is such an indulgence: yards and yards of beautiful black leather, substantial headrests, rich chrome trim, bountiful and sumptuous room for seven. With the GL350's turbocharged diesel V-6 engine, the EPA says the GL will eke out 21 mpg on the freeway, which is perhaps one way to justify the use of such a massive and heavy vehicle as a people carrier, when for most owners a minivan, perhaps even Mercedes-Benz's own R-class, would suffice. If it seems like I have mixed feelings about the GL-class, I do: I can't help but admire its looks and its capabilities, but I also can't ignore its wastefulness. [Admittedly, I have the same feelings when I get into a Range Rover.] That said, the Bluetec diesel at least attempts to address that issue, and it's a damn fine powertrain.

Twenty-three miles per gallon out of a monster like this is pretty darn impressive, but that's the trip computer's indicated mileage over the last 700-some journalist-driven miles. Granted, the EPA's rating for this vehicle is a more modest 17 mpg in the city, 21 mpg on the highway, and 19 mpg combined, but even those numbers are very good for a 5400-pound, seven-passenger vehicle.

Captaining the GL350 feels a bit like driving a bus, which is appropriate, since there are four seating positions with the LATCH system for kids' car seats. Unfortunately, you'd have a tough time getting to the two children in the back row, but if your kids are old enough to buckle themselves, the GL-class makes a solid ritzy alternative to a minivan.

Porsche has now shown us the production Cayenne hybrid, powered by the Audi S4’s 333-hp, 3.0-liter supercharged V-6 engine instead of a Volkswagen 3.6-liter V-6. Mated to a 52-hp electric motor, this gives a maximum output of 374 hp, enough grunt for a 0-to-60-mph time of 6.4 seconds, just 0.4 second slower than the V-8–powered Cayenne S. An eight-speed automatic transmission will take the place of the six-speed unit on the prototypes we drove. (This powertrain will also find its way into the Panamera sedan.)

Like many hybrids, the Cayenne can drive solely on electric power, in this case up to a speed of 30 mph for the most feather-footed drivers. To enable efficient regenerative braking to charge the 288-volt nickel-metal hydride battery, Porsche locks up the torque converter very early but had to painstakingly tune the shifts to avoid jerkiness in the mode.

One of the key features of the Cayenne hybrid is its ability to coast at speed to eke out better gas mileage on the highway. At speeds up to 86 mph, the engine will shut down, only to be restarted when the driver asks for torque by stepping on the gas pedal. In order to do this smoothly, a clutch between the engine and electric motor reengages as the engine fires, a process that takes 300 milliseconds.

Porsche claims the vehicle averages 26 mpg in the latest European combined cycle—27 percent better than the Cayenne V-6—which is impressive for a 5700-pound SUV (that’s more than 300 pounds heavier than a Cayenne S).

vehicle, with a body-on-frame construction intended for long-term durability and off-road performance. With its responsive six-speed automatic transmission and Torsen limited-slip differential system, the LX 570 performs well, with passing and acceleration a snap, but its heft is never far out of mind when maneuvering or braking. Maneuverability on tight city streets can be challenging, and there's not a lot of cornering capability built in; there's a lot of body motion, and the steering is almost fingertip light at some times. Tow ratings range up to 8,500 pounds.

While Lexus seems to be openly discouraging serious off-roading treks with the LX570 by not offering any off-road options or accessories, the vehicle does have a high-clearance capability; active height control can raise the body a couple of inches at slower speeds to aid ground clearance, then lower it at higher speeds to reduce aerodynamic drag. Crawl Control also helps in low-speed maneuvers over boulder-strewn paths or scree-strewn hillsides.

The LX 570 has a seating arrangement that's quite a bit different than those of most other luxury SUVs, and there are good and bad points to it. As is typical, the third row is hard to get to and it's quite cramped. The second row seats are considerably more adult-sized—although a little flat. While the second rows fold and flip fully forward to expand cargo space, the third-row seats flip up and rotate to the side—allowing, more easily, a flat, continuous load floor for longer cargo items. The disadvantage to the setup is that the third-row seats can't be completely removed.

The cabin is tight and quiet, with low levels of road and wind noise, though the bellowing engine isn't hushed up to Lexus levels of refinement and can be heard even when cruising in some situations. Be ready for a ride that's somewhat cushy but involves lots of body motion in cornering as well as heaving over bumps.

The 2011 Lexus LX 570 comes loaded with comfort, convenience, and entertainment features, and there are even more luxury upgrades available to equip the LX 570 at the level of any other prestige-level SUV. Bluetooth and a nav system are included, and from features like a 180-degree camera that can see each way at a blind intersection to power-assist middle-row seats, there's a lot to love in the everyday-useful feature department. And if that's not enough, optional extras include a rear-seat entertainment system, radar-adaptive cruise control, and a 19-speaker Mark Levinson audio system. African Bubinga wood trim, heated and ventilated seats, and custom wheels are also available.

The Mercedes-Benz GL-Class is offered in three variants: GL350 Bluetec, GL450 and top-of-the-line GL550. The latter features the more powerful V8 engine, a more pronounced front grille and most of the less expensive models' optional features. That type of off-the-line power is well suited to a large SUV, and the diesel also yields superior fuel economy. All GL-Class models come equipped with a seven-speed automatic transmission with manual shift control. They also all come with an air-adjustable suspension and all-wheel drive.

In reviews, we've lauded the GL-Class' roomy seating, luxurious cabin and powerful engines. It's not the cheapest three-row luxury crossover, but it's easily one of the most practical and pleasant. All of the expected luxuries are either standard or available, and the GL also offers the advantage of being slightly less enormous than some truck-based rivals. Overall, we highly recommend the GL-Class if the price is not too off-putting.

"Now that it's assembled in South Carolina, the 2011 BMW X3 is a newly minted citizen, and clearly, it went overboard studying for its naturalization exams. The formula for success: Make it bigger, make it faster, make it richer—but don't make it too off-roady.

The new X3 ticks all those boxes, from its low-profile tires to its gently curved roof. It's grown in almost every dimension, and gained a great new interior with more second-row seat room. (It's almost the size of the original X5, now.) It looks fantastic, inside and out. It's fast enough to blur any memory of its stiff-riding, cheap-cabin ancestors.

The 2011 X3 doesn't need much explanation in its differences and distinctions from the outgoing model. It's visibly, physically larger, and it's much more attractive in a car-like way. Forget the trending to rugged, blocky SUV shapes you've seen at other brands, on other vehicles—the X3 swoops it up now with a character line delivered like the same cues on a 3-Series wagon.

The X3's interior, as well, will convince you that this crossover's an acceptable substitute for the rear-drive glory that the turbo 3-Series sedans muster. The dash arcs to envelop controls and angles them at the driver, adding to the more sedan-like air surrounding the new SUV. Whether it's the big, clear dials in the instrument pod, the simplified audio and climate switches, or even the off-centered iDrive controller, the X3's cabin seems more rested and at ease with its mission.

The base X3 xDrive28i is normally aspirated, and churns out 240 horsepower and 230 pound-feet of torque, while the 35i gets a 300-hp turbocharged six capable of getting to 60 mph in 5.5 seconds. That's nearly as quick as the 3-Series sedan, not to mention a few generations of M3 derivatives. The sole transmission this time around in the X3 is an eight-speed automatic, but it includes paddle-shifters."

"Instead of restyling the X5, BMW concentrated its efforts in the engine room. Even so, two of the four engine choices are carryover. The six-cylinder turbo-diesel, which was just introduced for 2009, is one, but that engine’s beguiling combination of 425 lb-ft of torque, coupled with the ability to post EPA numbers of 19 mpg city and 26 mpg highway, hardly mark it as a candidate for an upgrade. And at the top of the model range, the 4.4-liter turbo V-8 in the X5 M was similarly left alone, its 555 hp and 500 lb-ft apparently deemed sufficient, at least for the time being.

The two mainstay gasoline engines, however, are both new. In place of the old, normally aspirated straight six, the X5 now uses a new, turbocharged unit. It is not the twin-turbo example we know and love in the 135i, the 335i, and elsewhere, but instead is the latest generation turbo six. (Note to BMW geeks: that’s codename N55, rather than N45 for the older, twin-turbo six.) It appears also in the 535i Gran Turismo and the 2011 335i coupe/convertible—

both out this spring—and shortly in the new 535i sedan, on sale in June.

Now with a single turbocharger, direct injection, and Valvetronic, it produces 300 hp and 300 lb-ft (the same as the old twin-turbo six, depending on the application) but is more fuel-efficient and more easily meets emissions standards. In any event, its 300 ponies are 40 more than you got in the 2010-model X5, which had a normally aspirated six, and the 300 lb-ft is an even bigger increase over that car, which was rated at 225 lb-ft. Although the engine displaces the same 3.0 liters, its more bodacious output evidently has earned the base car a bigger number in its ridiculously complex model designation: X5 xDrive35i, rather than X5 xDrive30i.

The V-8 X5 has been granted a new model designation, too: xDrive50i—up from xDrive48i—as its new eight-cylinder engine has also made leaps in output while actually going down in size. In place of the previous, normally aspirated 4.8-liter V-8, there is a new, 4.4-liter unit that sports direct injection and two turbochargers. The change takes power up from 350 to 400 hp and torque from 350 to 450 lb-ft. This twin-turbo V-8 was first introduced in the X6 and will soon appear in the new 550i. Although more powerful than the outgoing 4.8-liter, the new turbo V-8 should return about the same fuel economy: 14/19 mpg." - Automobile Magazine

"For 2011, Audi will jettison its V-6 and V-8 engine in the Q7, and replace them both with its supercharged 3.0T V-6, in 272-hp and 333-hp strengths. Although this strategy might leave you scratching your head, the idea is to simplify the powertrain lineup while still preserving the idea of a base engine and a more powerful step-up offering. (The TDI V-6, by the way, will remain.)

We recently sampled both variations of the Q7 3.0T around Ingolstadt, and appreciated the smooth power delivery as well as the new eight-speed automatic transmission's wide spread of gear ratios. In high-output trim, the 3.0T is down 17 hp versus the old 4.2-liter V-8, but matches the 325 lb-ft torque rating. Thanks to the versatility of the eight-speed automatic, the Q7 never feels lacking in forward thrust. We found the performance of the high-spec 3.0T strong enough to make it a credible replacement for the 4.2-liter V-8.

The base 3.0T's 272 hp can't quite match the old 3.6-liter V-6's 280 hp, but the 295 lb-ft of torque betters the 266 lb-ft offered by the previous, normally aspirated V-6. The slightly dulled reflexes of the lower-output 3.0T are still perfectly adequate for a people hauler - acceleration isn't neck-snapping, but you'll have no problem merging with traffic or passing dawdlers.

Both versions of the 3.0T are projected to use less fuel than the engines they replace, but exact EPA numbers are not yet available; the eight-speed automatic transmission alone is supposedly good for a 5 percent fuel economy gain." - Automobile Magazine

"The big Mercedes SUV is such an indulgence: yards and yards of beautiful black leather, substantial headrests, rich chrome trim, bountiful and sumptuous room for seven. With the GL350's turbocharged diesel V-6 engine, the EPA says the GL will eke out 21 mpg on the freeway, which is perhaps one way to justify the use of such a massive and heavy vehicle as a people carrier, when for most owners a minivan, perhaps even Mercedes-Benz's own R-class, would suffice. If it seems like I have mixed feelings about the GL-class, I do: I can't help but admire its looks and its capabilities, but I also can't ignore its wastefulness. [Admittedly, I have the same feelings when I get into a Range Rover.] That said, the Bluetec diesel at least attempts to address that issue, and it's a damn fine powertrain.

Twenty-three miles per gallon out of a monster like this is pretty darn impressive, but that's the trip computer's indicated mileage over the last 700-some journalist-driven miles. Granted, the EPA's rating for this vehicle is a more modest 17 mpg in the city, 21 mpg on the highway, and 19 mpg combined, but even those numbers are very good for a 5400-pound, seven-passenger vehicle.

Captaining the GL350 feels a bit like driving a bus, which is appropriate, since there are four seating positions with the LATCH system for kids' car seats. Unfortunately, you'd have a tough time getting to the two children in the back row, but if your kids are old enough to buckle themselves, the GL-class makes a solid ritzy alternative to a minivan." - Automobile Magazine

Overview
Lexus' interpretation of the Toyota Land Cruiser first went on sale as the LX 450 in early 1996. The full-size body-on-frame sport/utility got a significant upgrade for 1998, when it became the LX 470. But arguably, the most significant generational difference was in 2008, when the LX 570 went on sale.

The new eight-passenger model has new styling, is bigger and heavier, yet this three-ton plus ute moves out like a rocket ship, speeding to 60 mph in only 6.5 seconds. That impressive feat can be credited to the LX 570's powertrain, a 383-horsepower, 5.7-liter V-8 backed by a six-speed automatic. It's a workhorse, too, capable of towing up to 8500 pounds and equipped with enough technological goodies and downright toughness to make it nearly unstoppable off-road.

For the majority of people who will never see dirt or rocks in the LX, there are still more than enough standard creature comforts to make them happy, too, plus options like a 19-speaker Mark Levinson surround sound system, park assist, and rear-seat entertainment.

What's New
There are some minor changes for the 2011 Lexus LS. There is a new black interior with leather trim. A heated steering wheel option has been added to the Luxury Package, which includes semi-aniline leather interior with Bubinga wood trim and a cool box for drinks. The LX receives a brake override system, too. Other than that, the color Costa Azul has been discontinued.

Exterior
The new LX looks like a cleaner, smoother version of the previous model -- and an awful lot like the Land Cruiser on which it's based. The LX rolls on 20-inch wheels as standard equipment, and the wheels in the Luxury Package add a Liquid Graphite finish.

Interior
The commodious, three-row cabin of the Lexus LX has a variety of leather/wood interiors, 14-way driver seat and 12-way front passenger seat, and a 19-speaker surround sound system. The third row power folds out of the way and the second row power slides.

Performance & Handling
The Lexus LX 570 moves a lot faster than a 6164-pound sport/utility should, going from 0 to 60 mph in 6.5 seconds. That the 5.7-liter V-8 has 115 more horsepower than the engine it replaces doesn't hurt. It also brakes from 60 mph in 133 feet. Handling is not its strong suit, but it is certainly competent in turns.

Safety
Dual front airbags, dual front knee airbags, first- and second-row side airbags, and three-row side curtain airbags are standard. The LX also comes standard with disc brakes with ABS, brake assist, electronic brake-force distribution, and stability control." - Motortrend

"The 2011 Toyota Sienna may be the Japanese automaker's third-generation minivan, but Toyota emphasizes that the new Sienna is becoming more carlike than ever. The Sienna gets smart updates to its drivetrains and to its interior package for 2011-but not to its seating configurations, which still lag the class-leading Dodge Grand Caravan and Nissan Quest in flexibility. The Sienna is offered in a broad model range, and continues to be the only minivan with an all-wheel-drive option. Toyota says the base price of the 2011 Sienna will come in below the current vehicle's $25,000 price point. Available in front- or all-wheel-drive versions, with either a four- or six-cylinder engine and in seven- or eight-passenger versions, the new Sienna will go on sale in February 2010. The 2011 Sienna has new body panels with a more dynamic front end, but it's nothing to draw a flashmob or attract civil disobedience. A wide grille is framed either in body-color paint or in metallic trim; SE versions get a very aggressive front-end treatment. There's a sharper crease along its shoulders and geometrically bold windows, and as the lines taper rearward, the Sienna draws to a roofline that's similar to that on the Kia Sedona. The 2011 Sienna rides on the same chassis as the previous generation, so while it's marginally shorter and wider than before, there's not a tremendous change in its proportions. Inside, the Sienna has adopted the latest Toyota styling theme, with a dramatic arc separating driving controls from secondary and passenger-shared controls. The dash is styled to give the impression of more passenger space, and Toyota says slimmer seats and controls add to the feeling of roominess in the new Sienna. The interior looks less expensive than before, though. Plastic trim is replaced on some versions by matt woodgrain trim; pricier versions get Optitron gauges like those in some Lexus models." - The Car Connection
