Jun 07, 2011 – Porsche Cars North America, Inc. (PCNA), importer and distributor of Porsche sports cars, Cayenne SUVs and the Panamera four-door sports sedan line-up in the United States, today announced May sales in the United States of 2,817 units compared to the same period last year when it sold 1,873, an increase of 50 percent.

May's results represent the German sports car maker's best May sales total in the United States since 2007. So far in 2011, the company's sales are 12,996 units. In the same five-month period last year, Porsche sales were 8,842, which represents a 47 percent increase.

For the month, Porsche's Approved Certified Pre-Owned vehicle sales were 753, compared to 796 last year. The year-to-date total was 3,596, compared to 3,220 last year.

This here is the long wheelbase version of the all-new, fourth-generation Audi A8 with a new 6.3-liter W12 engine.

Ingolstadt's flagship limo has an overall length of 5,267 millimeters (17.28 ft), meaning it's 130 mm (0.43 ft) longer than the regular version. The wheelbase has grown by the same amount, to 3,122 mm (10.24 ft) while the height has increased by 2 mm (0.08 in) to 1,462 mm (4.8 ft). Width remains unchanged at 1,949 mm (6.39 ft).

All that extra length benefits rear-seat passengers who also get longer rear doors to further ease access.

For those that want the royal treatment, the German firm offers the option of two separate and power-adjustable seats that can be heated, ventilated and adjusted in a variety of ways including forward and back, seat cushion depth and seat back angle with top section adjustable separately.

Between the individual rear seats that are standard equipment in the A8 L W12 quattro, there's a full-length console that extends back from the center tunnel to the rear shelf, and can be specified with several goodies such as a folding table or a refrigerator.

Rear passengers also get separate controls for the air conditioning that is controlled by 25 adjusting motors, while Audi also offers an entertainment system with two 10.2-inch screens.

The A8 L W12 quattro model is powered by a new 6.3 FSI W12 engine with 500HP and a peak torque of 625 Nm (460.98 lb-ft) at engine speeds at 3,250 rpm. With this powerhouse, the A8 L accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h (62mph) in just 4.9 seconds and reaches a governed top speed of 250 km/h or 155 mph.

It consumes 12.0 liters per 100 kilometers or the equivalent of 19.6 US mpg.

The W12 version features subtle visual cues that differentiate it from the other A8 L's that will follow (with diesel and gasoline powertrains)

, including a unique radiator grille, chromed inserts of in the air inlets, and chromed applications on the exterior mirrors.

The 2012 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class Grand Edition made its European debut on Monday, but the German automaker tells Inside Line that it won't be sold in the U.S.

"No plans to offer it here," said Mercedes-Benz USA spokesman Rob Moran in an e-mailed reply to an Inside Line query.

The seven-passenger GL-Class Grand Edition, a luxury off-roader, ranges in price from $112,999 for the GL350 CDI 4Matic BlueEfficiency to $139,657 for the GL500 4Matic.

Cosmetic upgrades include light-alloy wheels, two-tone leather seats in a new design and a wood-and-leather steering wheel in black ash. The GL-Class Grand Edition also gets a redesigned front bumper with integrated LED daytime running lights, dark-tinted headlights and a radiator grille with black, high-gloss louvers.

The GL-Class Grand Edition is available in several engine choices, including a 340-horsepower 4.6-liter V8 in the GL450 model to a 388-hp 5.5-liter V8 in the GL500 model.

Mercedes-Benz says despite its deluxe amenities, the GL-Class Grand Edition has "genuine off-road credentials."

It is equipped with an Airmatic air suspension that enables ground clearance of up to 12 inches. A standard Off-Road Pro technical package includes a limited-slip rear axle and center differentials. It also gets Off-Road antilock brakes, Downhill Speed Regulation and Hill-Start Assist.

BMW has officially announced changes for its 2011 BMW X6, and the big news is that the German automaker will swap out its twin-turbo N54 inline-six in this sport utility for the new twin-scroll single turbo N55 mill, just like it did in the new 5 Series. The move continues BMW's drive toward simplifying its engine options while at the same time providing X6 owners with stronger acceleration and increased efficiency. BMW claims the N55 matches the twin-scroll N54's power numbers while also cutting weight from the engine bay. Question: What is Porsche's best-selling model?

Could it be the iconic 911? Sorry. Perhaps the recently introduced
Panamera sedan? Nope. Maybe the more affordable Boxster? Not even.

The answer is the Cayenne SUV.

Do you find anything odd about a two-ton SUV being the undisputed
sales king of the German company known for making sports cars? While
enthusiasts revel in the performance of the company's small sports cars
and the brand's racing history, the fact is that Porsche is a business.
It has employees that conceive of, design, build, and sell products.

From a business perspective, Porsche is just a manufacturer of
widgets, and for a company to remain a going concern, said company must
sell widgets at a profit. Increasing the number of widgets is also
smiled upon by shareholders. This is why Porsche builds the Cayenne:
It's good business.

Since its European introduction in 2002, the Cayenne has been
Porsche's top sales performer, with more than 280,000 sold. According to
insiders at Porsche, profits from the Cayenne helped fund the
development of the most recent 911, Boxster, and Cayman models, as well
as the Panamera. The SUV has been good for the company and ergo, good

model that Porsche could have stopped with a new exterior and a duly
revised interior. But they didn't.

Under the new design, the new Cayenne is much more Porsche-like than
the old. First, it's nearly 400 pounds lighter. This is significant and
impacts the SUV's dynamic performance and fuel economy in a big way.

There are two distinct suspensions:

One uses conventional steel
springs while the other is an air suspension marketed as the Porsche
Active Suspension Management. A $3,000 option, we much preferred the
air-assisted ride as it provides an exceptionally smooth and stable ride
plus suspension settings that ranged from luxury car downy to sporty
stiff.

We marveled at the Auto-Stop function, not because we've never seen
it before, but that this fuel-saving technology seemed out of character
for a sports car company. This feature turns off the engine when the
Cayenne is stopped in traffic and immediately re-starts as the driver
lifts off the brake. Additionally, the audio and ventilation systems
remain fully functional, as do all safety systems. This feature was
necessary to meet new European Union C02 standards, so the Auto-Stop
function is active unless the driver disables it. U.S.-bound Cayennes,
however, don't have to meet the EU emissions standard, so the driver
must activate the Auto Stop function when they feel like being frugal.

Land Rover unveiled its all-new 2012 Range Rover Autobiography Ultimate Edition last month at the Geneva Motor Show, but the super luxurious SUV made its North American debut this week at New York Auto Show. Limited in production to just 500 units globally, fewer than 50 of the 2012 Land Rover Range Rover Autobiography Ultimate Edition models will be coming to the United States with an equally exclusive price tag of $170,000.

For optimal luxury, the biggest change made for the Autobiography Ultimate Edition was equipping this model with rear captain’s chairs instead of a full bench seat found in current Range Rovers. In addition to the added room allowed by the new seating arrangements, the four-passenger cabin is split by a full-length center console which hides other luxury features. Under the wood trimmed compartment sits a bottle chiller for champagne or sparking wine bottles as well as two individual compartments to store the champagne flutes. Full glasses can be held by fold-out glass holders shaped from aluminum. Finally, there is a laptop tray that is stored under the rear center armrest, and it easily folds out for use by either occupant. As would be expected with such opulent accommodations, the rear seating area has its own climate controls, and the seats are each power adjustable with heating and cooling functions.

Rear entertainment systems are almost as important in luxury vehicles these days, and the Range Rover Autobiography Ultimate Edition doesn’t disappoint with a pair of Apple iPad mounted to the back of each front seat and can fold down when not in use. The entire interior is lined with rich materials such as the hand-crafted, semi-aniline leather seats, exclusive Kalahari wood veneer and machined aluminum accents, but the cargo area is where this model really stands out. The cargo floor area is lined with teak wood, inspired by a super-yacht, with rubbery inserts to prevent cargo from sliding around. This teak wood is also found on the inside of the tailgate.

To keep this new Range Rover model more low key, the exterior has received fewer enhancements than the cabin, but it should still be enough for sharp-eyed Land Rover fans to pick one of these limited models out in a crowd. Two exclusive colors will be offered on the Autobiography Ultimate Edition, Roussillon Red (pictured here) and Otago Stone, and new 20-inch, multi-spoke wheels act as more elegant jewelry. Final touches to the exclusive appearance include a distinctive front grille and side fender vents.

Although this model is definitely built for passenger luxury, the driver still gets to have some fun with the supercharged 5.0-liter V-8 producing 510 horsepower and 461 lb-ft of torque. Land Rover says this is good enough to power its massive SUV from a dead stop to 60 miles per hour in just 5.9 seconds. As is the case with any Range Rover, the Autobiography Ultimate Edition comes with incredible off-road abilities and Land Rover’s Terrain Response system, but it isn’t very likely that many of these will be put in a condition to use either one.
